Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Football

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For American football, see WikiProject Deletion sorting/American football

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Football (soccer). It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Football|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Football (soccer). For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Sports.

Potentially fails WP:GNG here. I found him on Transfermarkt and Soccerway but these don't count towards notability. I found some brief mentions in La Brecha, Pasión Rojiblanca and ESPN but none of this can be considered significant coverage. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 11:52, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A really poorly sourced article on a BLP about a footballer that briefly played in the 2nd tier of Mexico. The best that I could find was Futbol Sapiens, which is not enough to show a WP:GNG pass. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 11:15, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Poorly sourced women's footballer. The two independent sources in the article are a trivial mention and an interview with minimal routine coverage. I can't find any WP:SIGCOV. JTtheOG (talk) 07:33, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result was Speedy/procedural keep - this relates to longstanding conflict/disruption related to the history/legacy of the famous Romanian football team 'Steaua București', with two clubs (FCSB and CSA Steaua București) both claiming the heritage. AFD is totally the wrong venue to deal with any perceived issues related to this, FSCB is clearly notable.‎. GiantSnowman 12:58, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The information presented here is mostly false. The date the club was founded is wrong, the records are wrong, the history is wrong, former players are wrong, about 80% of the entire article is wrong.

If you go to the club's own website, you find nothing about the information presented here. It says here that Fcsb has 27 domestic titles. When its chairman of the board was asked if this is true, he denied it. https://as.ro/fotbal/liga-1/mihai-stoica-explicatie-total-neasteptata-motivul-pentru-care-numarul-27-va-fi-trecut-pe-tricourile-campioanei-fcsb-398416.html So why keep this article? It makes no sense. Just because there is some wrong information posted on some website? That is the same as fake news. Does Wikipedia support fake news now? TPTB (talk) 13:19, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comment AfD is not for debating the content. It is to establish WP:notabilty and appropriate WP inclusion/exclusion. Please feel free to correct the info with WP:reliable sources or reframe the AfD proposal. If the sources are geniune and reliable, btw we might need a conversation about how to use them.

  • FWIW the article appears to be well written and since the club is in Liga I and has always been so and have had major success, I !vote keep and cleanup using better and more reliable sources. If it turns out that these assertions are false then we can reconsider notability— Iadmctalk  14:05, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • Try the articles in Wikipedia:Fake news to root out sites that are either satirical or disengenuous and read the project pages to get some idea of what we think about Fake News— Iadmctalk  14:14, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: this is an invalid and arguably malicious nomination. As can be seen on the talk pages of this article and various others on related entities, there is a long-running legal dispute. The nom is likely to be proved correct that FCSB will be disassociated from most if not all of the historic achievements of the Steaua Bucharest club in due course, but AFAIK this is not definitive at present in terms of reliable sources stating exactly what can be allocated to whom. Regardless, the FCSB entity is an extant sports club (and won the Romanian championship this season just gone) so is unequivocally a valid topic for an article, and would be still valid as a topic as a means of clarification on the events of the past years even if it were dissolved altogether tomorrow. The nom has seemingly lost their patience in this matter and now simply wants to have all the information deleted rather than have contentious information removed by the proper means and processes. • Procedural close AfD is absolutely not the right venue for this discussion. User appears to have a partial ban for editing topics related to FCSB. Invalid nomination. Jay eyem (talk) 17:14, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Procedural close – Clearly FCSB inherits the records of FC Steaua Bucharest, being prevented from using the name for bureaucratic reasons. Svartner (talk) 23:34, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Moldovan football stadium fails to meet WP:GNG per WP:NSTADIUM. Available sources are WP:TRIVIALMENTIONs, which makes sense, since it's basically just a soccer field. 2011 QAFL reserves season[edit]

Fails WP:GNG: references are all database or WP:ROUTINE coverage by non-independent sources (e.g. the league, the clubs within it, and the online database where scores are entered. This also fails any reasonable 'pub test' of notability: it's a routine season article for a league which itself has no article and – as the reserves league for an already fairly minor competition – would also fail GNG. Aspirex (talk) 07:25, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comment What if it was merged into 2011 NEAFL season (with a lot of info taken out)? When the VFA/L reserves existed, for instance, those results were referenced on the main senior season page. These were reserves for 7/17 NEAFL clubs that season Totallynotarandomalt69 (talk) 09:14, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: I would still delete, even after merging any salient points. I don't believe "2011 QAFL reserves season" is a likely search for anyone seeking this information. Aspirex (talk) 05:37, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete I'm not even convinced individual NEAFL seniors seasons are notable, let alone reserves seasons! – Teratix 08:36, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete – Clearly fails on WP:GNG. Svartner (talk) 17:26, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Redirect and selective merge to 2011 NEAFL season as a reasonable ATD. Fails GNG and lacks notability as a standalone article. Frank Anchor 14:12, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Can the editors advocating a merger please explain more clearly exactly what material they believe should be merged? Most 2011 NEAFL clubs did not even field teams in this competition. – Teratix 15:43, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think the prose background about how the QAFL and ACTAFL came together and what happened to the minor grade structures when that occurred is relevant for merge (as long as the equivalent info is added for how it happened in Canberra). That's probably all I'd merge - I'm not sure it would be right to merge any of the results across, that would be like including VFL results on an AFL season page. Aspirex (talk) 20:58, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Nuke From wikipedia, reserve seasons don't even qualify under WP:NSEASONS, you can have some reserve stuff on a top season article, but not an article about a reserve team season, that's just overkill on data for wikipedia. Govvy (talk) 21:22, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Just another case of WP:LISTCRUFT to appeal to the small minority of ardent fans. The subjects are not described as a group, failing WP:LISTN. Additionally WP:NOTDATABASE and WP:ROUTINE. As with sources per WP:RS if these are not unsourced or dead links, a big portion of these are WP:PRIMARY and announcments; not helping this list to assert notability. SpacedFarmer (talk) 17:16, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete – Per nom. Svartner (talk) 19:02, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • WP:NOTDATABASE and WP:ROUTINE don't apply here (this isn't a database and ROUTINE is either about events or specific coverage, and WP:LISTN might be satisfied as FIFA does list them all on their website, though I could not quickly find an article with a list of broadcasters by country, common for Europe. LISTCRUFT is also very close to an "I don't like it" argument. However, there's more at play here - the 2019 and 2023 editions have their own pages. The 2019 one could use a little work but the 2023 one is well done. Removing this page would remove the information for the 2011 and 2015 World Cups, which probably need their own pages. So this probably doesn't need to exist, but we can't do a double merge to non-existent articles. SportingFlyer T·C 21:02, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
LISTN would not be satisfied if FIFA is the one distributing the details, hence WP:PRIMARY, hence not independent. Conyo14 (talk) 22:56, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep with sourcing from [4] and [5]. Esolo5002 (talk) 04:14, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
these two are guide to how to watch, thus WP:NOTGUIDE. SpacedFarmer (talk) 09:22, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not guide is not about sourcing. Are the publications unreliable? Esolo5002 (talk) 20:29, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I did not say unreliable but these source does not help it to assert notability. SpacedFarmer (talk) 22:47, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You have not provided a reason for why. WP:NOTGUIDE is about Wikipedia, not about sources. Please provide a different Wikipedia rule. Esolo5002 (talk) 04:18, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Have you looked at the quality of the sources? You think dumping any WP:RANDOM will make it pass notability guidelines. SpacedFarmer (talk) 12:37, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Again the thing you have linked to me talks about accessing a random page on Wikipedia, and talks nothing about sourcing. I would recommend reviewing the links you are sending before pressing reply. I am trying to understand your argument. Esolo5002 (talk) 14:42, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The nom has been continually nominating articles about previously broadcasted sporting events at AfD using basically WP:IDLI arguments. Sometimes the AfDs are correct on sourcing grounds, sometimes the grounds for deletion are a bit more spurious. SportingFlyer T·C 17:16, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Weak delete—Has something of a track record with professional teams while still a young player. Too old for WP:TOOSOON, I admit, but I've seen some precedent lately, especially for English players, to suggest that this level of professional experience, even at the second-tier level is sufficient to vote keep. Anwegmann (talk) 22:33, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak keep per sources provided below by JTtheOG. I was on the fence to begin with, but these two sources, one in German and the other in Slovakian, provide more than passing references to this player and seem to be from reliable, independent outlets. Although ultimately a transfer announcement, the first source provides somewhat meaningful coverage of Vondryska's style of play and past experience. The second source is much more substantive and singularly focuses on the player, his experience playing with the Slovakian youth national team, and provides much more than a simple interview. I recognize that this isn't a very strong record, particularly concerning the first source, but it is significant coverage of the player as a player, which is enough to fulfill the minimum requirements of WP:GNG. Although I disagree with this precedent, if three appearances in two seasons in the English fourth-tier and 14 appearances in the English fifth and sixth tiers with some local coverage is enough, 25 appearances in the Slovakian second and third tiers and one appearance in the Slovakian top-tier with a smattering references is also enough. Very new team in the amateur USL League Two. All my searches brought up mainly schedule announcements from other USL League Two teams. The only substantive coverage I could find was the this local article from 2022. Anwegmann (talk) 23:58, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • The Shreveport-Bossier Journal did cover them: [6] [7] [8] However it doesn't look like that is the top newspaper in the city and other newspapers haven't seemed to cover them. Marginal, but not a clear delete. SportingFlyer T·C 02:42, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think that would fall under local coverage, which doesn't help toward WP:SIGCOV. Anwegmann (talk) 03:53, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There's absolutely no problem with being local coverage in this situation as long as the source is reliable. SportingFlyer T·C 20:54, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - You have other sources covering Blue Goose SC, including the USL 2 official website, the NPSL (though not much), and another news website (UndertheRadar NWLA)... not sure if the latter qualifies as 'local' coverage since it covers the entire Northern Louisiana, not just Shreveport - but there seems to be decent news coverage of a semi-professional (not amateur) team that continues to play in a significant [notable] league: USL II. —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 14:10, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My problem with that is league websites are generally not true secondary coverage of a club. The last news website looks like a blog and may not be reliable. SportingFlyer T·C 20:53, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's the same general issue I have. If it was consensus that league websites were seen as independent of the team and secondary, I wouldn't have nominated the article for deletion. It's certainly not a clear consensus. Anwegmann (talk) 00:24, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Played one season in the American third division and otherwise played in amateur leagues. Now coaches at a private high school in Jackson, Mississippi. Several searches brought up a single local mention for the amateur Mississippi Brilla and several local pieces on the success of the team he coaches. He exists and is clearly a decent coach of high schoolers, but this falls well short of WP:GNG and WP:SIGCOV. Anwegmann (talk) 00:28, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: this is a more substantial article than that on college basketball player Blessing Ejiofor, which seems to stand a decent chance of surviving AfD despite a lack of similar information about tournaments and awards, based solely on the existence of interviews and mentions in notable sources. So I expected that there would be at least local news coverage (i.e. independent of school newspapers and athletic sites) of Buffington.
He was not mentioned, as far as I can tell, in the Herald-Dispatch, although it's possible that the online search did not reach back as far as 2005 (it's also possible that the paper's coverage of Marshall soccer was not very extensive back them; it's much more extensive now that Marshall's program has achieved national prominence). I tried to search the Clarion-Ledger for mentions during Buffington's Mississippi College years, but was unable to get the site to finish loading on my ancient computer. A Google News search mainly turned up articles in "Mississippi Scoreboard" about the girls' soccer team that Buffington coaches. There may still be news coverage that I wasn't able to find, but I have my doubts at the moment. P Aculeius (talk) 11:37, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WP:LISTN is not met here due to a lack of coverage of the subjects as a group. As it stands, this is an indiscriminate list of mostly non-notable people. Let'srun (talk) 03:28, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yet this list only includes a self-selected number of players, many of whom have no article themselves, and has no sources discussing these players as a group. In my opinion, it is much more appropriate to have a category for the notable players who played here. Let'srun (talk) 17:45, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a bit unsure about this one, as he seemed to have a rather robust career, but it was entirely at the non-league, semi-pro level. There doesn't seem to be much of any WP:SIGCOV outside of this local newspaper coverage. I'd like to see what consensus is here, as it feels like a "delete" for me, but I'm curious what others think. I'd prefer to keep, however if not, suggest a redirect to the club page Scarborough F.C. His name is mentioned four times on the page, twice as player of the year and twice as manager. As the content on the article is sourced, it maybe a good idea to merge some of the content. Deletion doesn't help anyone. Govvy (talk) 10:42, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is another long-unsourced article of a Slovak men's footballer named Tomáš, whose career is mostly confined to clubs from lower league football clubs as well, before disappearing in 2011. I have searched on Google using a few keywords (e.g. "Tomáš Ďurica futbolista" and "Tomáš Ďurica Žilina"), but couldn't find any in-depth coverage of him that would meet WP:GNG. Ckfasdf (talk) 19:49, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's not true. These are not match reports, but rather articles about how the team won the championship, failed in the round of 16, et cetera, and football club notability is not based on whether they're important regionally, internationally, et cetera. They are also covered on an ongoing basis by the newspaper in their local area including sources not currently linked in the article, such as [17]: this is about the competition but the club is clearly the subject of the article. SportingFlyer T·C 23:18, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That is a routine coverage. According to WP:SPORTCRIT; Local sources must be independent of the subject, and must provide reports beyond routine game coverage. None of reference in the article provide reports beyond routine coverage, such as information about the team itself. Ckfasdf (talk) 02:22, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
