Narrowing

Since this template is sticking around, let's talk about how we can improve it. What if we narrow it to major types, per the suggestion by The stuart. Certainly Sandwich, Open sandwich, Hamburger, and Panini would qualify. What else? Ibadibam (talk) 02:10, 8 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I performed some sorting earlier (before it was just one long list), and also removed some entries that are not directly sandwiches (diff). Another user also removed some non-sandwich entries recently (diff). All of this helped to narrow it down quite a bit. I feel that if a sandwich is notable, it can be included on the template. The template is a functional navigational aid for notable sandwiches, and qualifies as per WP:NOTDUP. North America1000 03:54, 8 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Another approach

What do you think about this draft? It's an attempt to categorize sandwiches by form (closed, open, pocket, etc.) rather than ingredients (most sandwiches have some kind of meat and cheese in them, so it makes little sense to separate the meat one from the cheese ones). It doesn't really make the template smaller, but, as I said in the deletion discussion, this should be accomplished by merging some of the overlapping articles, rather than leaving some of the content out of the template. — Kpalion(talk) 23:26, 9 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Per the suggestion at the draft, I performed some extra sorting on the template page, adding the "Open sandwiches" section. I prefer sorting by ingredient (e.g. meat, cheese, etc.), but additional distinctions, such as the open sandwiches section, make the template useful too. This is how many categories for foods are organized on Wikipedia (e.g. Category:Prepared foods by main ingredient). I'm not sure that categorizing the list in part by using "closed sandwiches" is particularly useful, as many, and possibly most, sandwiches are closed.
